W.A. Bogart, B.A., LL.B. (University of Toronto), LL.M. (Harvard) is a retired Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Law (University of Windsor). He is the author/editor of eight books and many articles dealing with the role of courts, access to justice, the impact of litigation and empirical research on legal policy. He has lectured and delivered papers throughout North America and Europe.


Bill has developed international knowledge and expertise in the optimal mix of regulation and health/social supports to reduce harm from risky behaviours such as smoking, excessive gambling, alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of physical activity and non-medical use of drugs. Bill has been a frequent consultant to governments and other bodies in developing legal policy. 



Awards

Bill’s research has been supported with Awards from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy at the University of Toronto, and the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre (OPGRC).

He twice received Research Professorships from the University of Windsor, and was the Humanities Research Group Fellow. He received the University of Windsor Award for research and scholarship excellence and was Virtual Scholar in Residence with the Law Commission of Canada (VSR-LCC). In January 2007 he delivered a Martin Wesley lecture, in the distinguished faculty series of the Humanities Research Group, at the University of Windsor.

In 2010 he was named Distinguished University Professor, the highest academic distinction awarded to a faculty member of the University of Windsor.

Bogart has been a member of: the Board of Directors of the Canadian Law and Society Association; the Board of Advisors for the University of Windsor's Humanities Research Group; the Board of Directors of Pro Bono Law Ontario; the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer Society of Toronto; the Research Ethics Board of Unity Health, Toronto; the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre Policy Research Panel; the Panel on Research Ethics; and the National Self Represented Litigants Research Project. He served on the Selection Committee (Doctoral Fellowships) of the SSHRC; he has also served on its Review Committee. He Chaired the Adjudication Committee for the SSHRC for the VSR-LCC. He was Director of Research for the Federal Courts Rules Committee (with D.Ferland, Laval).
